ABOUT US

Bringing automation to your lab

Bionomous – the world’s first provider of AI-powered solutions for screening, sorting and dispensing of small biological entities. We are an innovative, agile and conscious team of biologists and engineers working to provide you with an easy-to-use and customisable solution to free up valuable time and increase efficiency.

Our patented technology was originally created to enable the mechanical sorting of zebrafish eggs. Now, we have adapted this technology to other small biological entities, such as Xenopus laevis oocytes and embryos, killifish and medaka eggs and even flower seeds.

Our patented technology was originally created to enable the mechanical sorting of zebrafish eggs. Now, we have adapted this technology to other small biological entities, such as Xenopus laevis oocytes and embryos, killifish and medaka eggs and even flower seeds.

We are a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL)

The idea of the EggSorted started in 2017 when Frank Bonnet, CEO of Bionomous, was working on a European project together with zebrafish researchers. He noticed that the manual sorting of zebrafish embryos was taking the valuable time of researchers and that it was a tiring and, thus, error-prone task.
Ana Hernando joined the project in 2019, and in November of that same year, Frank and Ana decided to found Bionomous, as a company to provide automatic solutions for the sorting of zebrafish eggs and similar entities.

Since 2019, Bionomous’ team has been growing and working on the development of the EggSorter. The device which was originally thought to sort zebrafish eggs has proven to work with different species and entities, such as xenopus eggs and embryos, and killifish eggs.

In 2021 we closed a 1.3M CHF Seed Round which will allow us to finish the development of the EggSorter and commercialize it in an industrial scale. In December 2022 we launched to the market the CE version of our first product – the EggSorter – with many new improvements based on the feedback of the users. And in January 2023, we closed a 2.7M USD Series A funding round that allows us to scale production and start deploying our product globally.

LOCATION

Bionomous was born the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland.  The EPFL is one of Europe’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan science and technology institutions, with three specific missions: education, research and technology transfer at the highest international level. The EPFL is ranked second in Europe in the areas of engineering and computer science according to the 2016 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities.

In 2021, Bionomous moved to Le Vivier Technology Park, in Villaz-St-Pierre, Switzerland. Le Vivier is managed by Nivalis Group, and it houses a mix of young startups and established businesses. This Swiss hub hosts leaders in industrial engineering and innovation. Its 20,000 m2 of large industrial spaces, offices and laboratories offers optimal operating conditions and it is a unique spot to start new collaborations and learn from different industry innovators.

BIO-ENVIRONMENT

Bionomous operates from the western part of Switzerland. Western Switzerland hosts high-tech competences in basic and applied research. In these fields, the region preserves the links that exist between Swiss and international entities, thus ensuring rich and fertile exchanges.

The region also offers centralised laboratories and state-of-the-art resources to facilitate biomedical research. They are available to the entire biomedical research community and have established many interactions with the industrial and start-up communities, giving the opportunity to companies such as Bionomous to grow and develop.
